Our D.C adventure

We decided to take Gav on a surprise trip before school starts and for his 5th birthday, so we planned a couple days/nights in Washington D.C. and then teased him for about 2 weeks about not knowing where we were taking him. The day before we left he said, "I figured out where we are going - we are going to Disney World!" Oops. Still, we had a great time and the absolute highlight for Gav was riding the Metro (three cheers for good public transportation!!!).

Here is David and Merritt chilling at midnight after seeing ALL of D.C., lost, in search of our hotel. Don't worry, no beer was actually consumed by the baby - Daddy would have never shared at that point!

We spent Saturday on the Mall exploring the Air and Space and Natural History museums, and taking in the sights of the great sculptures and monuments.

Hitting the city with kids was great, as long as you rolled with the punches and expected moments like the one below. . .

But we had some sweet moments, too, and decided D.C. hasn't seen the last of us!
(By the way, everyone we encountered told us how adorable our little girl was - maybe time to trim the mullet???)

Coming up out of the Metro - the longest escalator I have ever seen.

Merritt demonstrating at the hotel that yes, he can fit between the railings around the coi pond.

We went back down to the Mall at night and checked out the monuments all lit up. This is the WW II monument, which we had not seen before.

Ah, success. Sleepy boys, happy parents.

Sunday we took the Metro up to the National Zoo. While everyone was oooing and aahhing over the pandas, I turned around to find Gavin mesmerized by the 'CATS'.

Our own wild animal, more fierce than any other at the zoo.

We met up with our friends Danielle and Sam at the zoo, which is why we have a picture of all of us together! Thank you Danielle!
The boys were smiling because the orangutans were going over the walkway. Thank you orangutans!
